The residence on Northmoor Road, Oxford, renowned for having been the home of J. R. R. Tolkien, underwent a smart transformation project that successfully combined architectural preservation with advanced technology.
The project, carried out by AVINU, had a clear objective: to integrate an advanced automation system within a protected historic building while preserving its original aesthetic identity. The result is an environment where technology is present yet discreet, designed to support everyday living without ever being intrusive.
At the heart of the project is a fully integrated KNX system that manages lighting, climate control, shading, audio, and security within a single unified logic. The functions are coordinated to automatically adapt to different moments of the day, enhancing comfort, energy efficiency, and overall spatial quality.
Eelectron’s OL-U interfaces, in the Metal Edition version, represent the main point of interaction with the user: elegant and highly customizable devices, selected to blend seamlessly with the materials of the residence while delivering an intuitive user experience. The push-buttons enable control of scenarios, lighting, shading, and climate, also thanks to the integrated RGB bar with dimmer functionality.
Alongside the control interfaces, the system includes:
- presence sensors for automated environmental management
- advanced KNX logic for lighting and temperature control
- supervision systems via app for local and remote access
Thanks to the MyCustom personalization process, unique engraved symbols inspired by the Tolkien universe were also created, transforming the devices into a distinctive element of the project.
The system also integrates multiroom audio, home cinema, and advanced networking infrastructure, ensuring simple and comprehensive control both on-site and remotely.
This project demonstrates how a historic building can be transformed into an advanced smart home, where technology, design, and cultural heritage coexist in perfect harmony.
